Ambient Micro, LLC www.ambient-micro.com

Company started in 2005 with headquarters in Maui, HI and a engineering and test facility in Half Moon Bay, CA. developing ambient energy solutions to significantly extend the life of wireless devices and applications for defense, homeland security and commercial applications. Two HTDV awards assisted company in developing a patent-pending Multi-Source Ambient Power Supply Technology. Ambient secured follow-on funding totaling $1,270,000 in AFRL Phase I & II, ARDEC Phase I and CEROS/DARPA awards.

 

Archinoetics, LLC www.archinoetics.com

Company started in 2005 as a woman-owned high tech company focused on advancing technologies that fuse humans with computing, neuroscience, engineering and physics. HTDV project, Personal Fatigue and Performance Prediction Using Genetic Programming, led to a spin-off company, Sleep Performance, Inc. within 24 months of project's inception. New company provides sleep and fatigue analysis using a commercialized version of the HTDV unit.

 

Cellular Bioengineering, Inc. www.cellularbioengineering.com

Company started in 2003 with 10 employees focusing on tissue bioengineering, cellular transplantation, CCD chip and electronic sensors and biopharmaceutical development. HTDV project, “A Nanofiber-based Gel for Injuries caused by Radiological Incidents" received an AFRL R&D award and has interest from numerous entities for nuclear medicine and radiation remediation technology. Sales of gel product have been increasing. The 2nd HTDV project, Cell Matrix Chip technology, is gaining interest from major companies including SAIC, ICX and BAE Systems.

 

Nanopoint, Inc. www.nanopointimaging.com

Company started in 2004 as a spin-off from Hawaii-based Oceanit. This is Oceanit's second spin-off company (Hoana Medical is the first). Company sold commercial units of the cell tray imaging system developed with HTDV funding within 24 months. The cell-tray can hold up to thousands of individual cell spreads in a single tray. Company raised over $5 million Series A & B funding.

 

Kuehnle AgroSystems, LLC

Company's HTDV project enhanced the genetic capabilities of green microalgae for high yield biodiesel production as an alternative and sustainable fuel supply. This advanced technology can be extended to develop from the same production platform more nutritious MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) combined with oral vaccine delivery for military utility as well as other spin-out applications. The platform developed resulted in a new patent and the company receiving $1.2 million in NSF and Army SBIRs and $500,000 Series A funding

 

Makai Ocean Engineering www.makai.com

Makai was established in 1973 as a diversified ocean engineering and naval architecture company providing service in Hawaii and the Pacific. Today, Makai provides ocean engineering services world wide and is a major supplier of submarine cable installation and planning software. The company's software sales in FY06 exceeded $1.0 million and included subsidiary Oceantek's Mission Planning software. The increase in sales (four-fold from previous years) was due primarily to increase in functionality via the Oceantek software modules funded by HTDV.

 

Pacific Island Technology, Inc. www.pitec.com

Technology developed from research at the University of Hawaii. University researchers formed company in 1995 to commercialize the technology. The HTDV project produced a high quality prototype and data. The successful tests resulted in immediate interest from the US Army Night Vision Laboratory, BAE Systems and ICX Nomadics. Company received follow-on funding for continued development from BAE Systems.

 

Peletex, Inc. www.peletex.com

Incorporated in April 2000, this Kahului, Maui company partnered with Sandia National Laboratories for two HTDV awards. The projects combined Sandia's chem.-bio DF200 foam with Peletex's patented Aquaeus Froth Filter technology to develop a prototype for the submicron air filtration, extraction and sequestration of toxins. Company received Series A investments as well as being selected as one of 25 semi-finalists (out of 2,200 applicants) for the History Channel's Invent Now Challenge 2006.

 

Pipeline Communications and Technology www.pcatinc.com

Pipeline is a technology development and commercialization start-up company located in the Manoa Innovation Center, the State of Hawaii's tech incubator. Company developed several technologies using University of Hawaii intellectual property and funding by HTDV. Company also raised $1.6 million in Series A equity investments to commercialize the technology. The HTDV funded heat sink technology received interest from AMD as well as private investment of $650,000.

 

Trex Enterprises, Inc. www.trexenterprises.com

Trex Advanced Materials Group based in Lihue, Kauai applies its patented chemical vapor composite technology to develop ultra high purity silicon carbide parts for use in demanding environments and applications. The HTDV funded project, Chemical Vapor Composite (CVC) Silicon Carbide Optical Structure Fabrication/Assembly Research and Development, produced favorable results. Company received an Air Force Phase II award.

 

Williams Aerospace www.williamsaerospace.com

Company was founded in 2002 by the husband and wife team of Jeff and Leilani Williams. Corporate offices are located in Hawaii with satellite offices in Detroit, Michigan and Melbourne, Australia. HTDV project resulted in company receiving significant interest for mid-sized UAVs from various entities. Company also created spin-off company, AgriFlyte, to provide aerial monitoring services to the agriculture industry with technology developed from the HTDV project.
